Michigan 3rd year here, considering IM residencies out of state. This might be a bit of a broad topic, but i was just wondering if you guys know of any residencies in an urban area like Detroit, with a high volume of really sick patients. I've never ventured to an out of state urban hospital. Thankss

this is way way too broad but you can try NY and Pittsburgh/Philly, Minneapolis, Chicago

Any big county hospital would fit this bill, most every major city should have one affiliated with a medical school/residency. The more notorious ones where you'll get your ass kicked include LA County, Jackson Memorial, Parkland, Cook (Stroger), Grady. I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

oh right totally forgot LA and Grady. I also have heard UNLV is good too.

Bellevue (NYU), UCSF/SFGH, Jacobi (Einstein) also fit the bill.

How about Hennepin County in Minneapolis, anyone know anything about it?

Great program. It's not an academic powerhouse but great clinical training. It well run, the residents seem happy, and they get to work with amazing clinicians.

I think it should go on the list of awesome programs no one really knows about.

That's a program that interests me because of the population and its locale, I desperately want to get back to the cities... It seems the training must be decent, looks like they send a fair number of grads to decent fellowships every year. Trouble is I don't personally know anyone who has interviewed there or trained there (outside of surgery and EM at least)...

The clinical training is really good. I was impressed with the residents in the ICU

Bellvue (NYU), LA County USC, LA County Harbor, Cook County, Parkland. Pretty much any county hospital. Not hard to find.

King County Hospital in Brooklyn.

You will see any and every disease under the sun there.

i have a friend doing rotations there; he loves it. it's a relatively competitive program even though it's a county hospital (you'll be competing with a lot of local U of Minnesota grads). make sure to do well on your steps!
