IM Sub-specialization after FM?

Hello everyone,

I am not sure if this topic was already discussed before, but I would really appreciate some inputs regarding this. I am a PGY-1 resident in FM and I have been thinking about sub-specializing after my residency. Are there any chances for applying to fellowships in IM sub-specialties after completing my residency in FM?

Sure. You can apply to Palliative Care. Or Sleep Medicine. Or Sports Medicine. Or Geriatrics. Or Adolescent Medicine. Those are all IM subspecialties that are also FM subspecialties... and as such are joint products between the ABIM, the ABFM, and (in certain cases such as sleep) other boards.

Oh. You wanted to apply to one of the other ones? Nope. No way, no how. If you want to do cards, GI, heme/onc, endo, rheum, etc.... do an IM residency first.

Adolescent is an IM subspecialty? Huh. I though IM people would want to avoid the teenagers, given that they went for adult medicine in the first place.

The Adolescent Medicine Certification Program is jointly developed by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), and the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP).

What is exactly is Adolescent Medicine anyway? I mean obviously they see teens but what do they do that a normal pediatrician or family doctor can't do?

As far as I've seen, they learn to use words like "hashtag" and "LOL" in conversations with patients.

Other than that, not much.

Adolescent folks end up being the PCP and big time advocates of complicated teenagers - those with messed up social lives, drug problems, teenage pregnancies, eating disorders. The Adolescent guy is one of the most well loved physicians in my shop and has been a savior for these teens. But yeah, it probably shouldn't be an IM fellowship.

I *briefly* considered doing an adolescent fellowship, then I found out it was a three year fellowship.
