So I have searched and scoured the internet but I cannot seem to find a website that will tell me what hospitals are open to FMG's for 4th year electives. I know that one exists, but my friend cannot recall the name. I have seen the IMG friendly hospital lists for residencies, but the problem is that Most of those hospitals while friendly to IMGS for residency, are not so friendly when it comes to doing electives there. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a website that was particular to 4th year electives at US hospitals.

Thanks in advance

I would look at programs that take a lot of FMG residents. It doesn't hurt to apply or call and ask and see what they say. Also tell them what med school you are from. I would be prone to guess that those programs that take a fee for doing a rotation there would consider you more because then they are getting paid to take you. Sorry if I can't help you further. You might try a different forum and see if you get any hits there, especially the FMG forums.

You can do them in states like Texas, Louisiana for sure. Don't know how far away they are from you though.

How about NY state? I heard there are lotsa FMGs there.

Cleveland Clinic is FANTASTIC for IMGs. Not only is the elective free, but they provide you with free housing as well. The trick is to get a spot though, especially for summer months. So apply early. Also, you need to make sure you have medical indemnity insurance so that you can actually do something. Otherwise, all you can have set up is an observership, which isn't really as useful as an elective.

I can´t still believe how fantastic is that Cleveland clinic. The trick is the Step 1 requirement.

One useful site is this, the AAMC. You can browse this by IMS friendly, fees, region., etc.

It is ironic....some programs (besides PA programs) that are completely anti-IMG for student electives are extremely IMG friendly for accepting residents into their program. I really wonder why that is?? Any thoughts??

thanks macro, thats the website i have been trying to find for a while

it's the same ironic thing where some programs, if you want to do a residency there, DO NOT WANT YOU TO ROTATE THERE FOR ELECTIVES! I still am trying to get my head around that one. I don't quite understand it. Someone explained it to me once but I forgot...

I know UAB is one of the places that refuses to allow IMG's (along with DO's) for residency, and yet they take in IMG's and DO's for their fellow programs all the time. Makes you scratch your head, but I guess they feel more comfortable knowing you completed an ACGME residency.

Anyhow... there are hospitals in Illinois, California, New York and Maryland that have 3rd year core clerkships for caribbean schools like Ross and St. Georges (check each school's website for a full listing). I don't see why those hospitals wouldn't accept a student requesting to do a 4th year elective.
