Hey all,

I know there is a thread on hospitals that take IMGs, but does anyone know specifically which hospitals take a HIGH percentage of IMGs for Internal Meds residency (and H1B visa preferably)?

Thx,

Search the threads.

There is also a website called usmleforum.com that is EXTREMELY disorganized, but they have a running list of programs that are sending out interviews and rejections as well. Most of the places that are on that running list of interviews sent out have a good amount of IMGs in their programs.

Gundersen Lutheran in La Crosse, Wisconsin (IM) has a good record of having IMG in each year class. Excellent environment and great residents.

check out this website matcharesident.com you need a subscription but I found it extremly useful. you can check what each hospital/program is offering in term of visas
generally H1b visa offering programs are community hospital that are either inner city hospital or rural hospitals university hospital, apart from few exceptions don't offer H1b

Here are a kouple of programs that are pretty IMG friendly and also sponsor H1b:

-clevaland clinic
-metrohealth in cleveland
-emory
-St. Louis University
-University of Alabama
-Temple University
-Drexel University
-Thomas Jefferson University
-Mayo clinic
-Oregon Health and Sciences University

There are a number of others who'd consider sponsoring H1b if you're currently a student here. Otherwise, as per the earlier post, I'd look at community hospital programs.

I believe SLR in NYC is very IMG friendly. They post resident profiles on their website. Nearly every resident is IMG. Aside from the big 4 in NYC, SLR would be on that next level of IM prestige. With 64 PGY-1 spots and the largest residency program overall (combining all specialties) in the US, you'll have a good shot.

It's certainly not FMG unfriendly but, there is about 1 FMG each year (out of 30-35 interns) in the IM class, usually from places like Cambridge. So I'm not sure I'd call it FMG friendly.

Also, I don't think they've ever matched a Carib student and the only IMG they've matched in the last several years was a dual citizenship (US/Ireland) student who went to UC-Dublin for med school. I'm not very familiar with the current intern class but I don't remember seeing too many foreign grads on that list.

Agreed. Also I think UAB and Mayo have not more than 5 IMGs? I think thats standard for most upper-upper mid tier programs (broadening the tier from MGH, BWH and UCSF, JHU).

i guess its a matter of perspective, i keep on looking at this the way i looked at med school admissions, in terms of how international students were considered in the whole process.

International applicants to med school are viewed WAY more favorably than FMG applicants to residency. They tend to be at the top of their country's academic pecking order, may have already studied in the US for awhile, and come with a fat wad of cash to pay their inflated tuition. Plus, there are minimal visa issues.

FMGs come with minimal experience in the way US medicine works (University education is a lot more uniform around the world than medical education/practice is), often have visa issues (you're now an employee, not a student) and need to get paid.

There's really no IMG equivalent in the med school application process. Very few US citizens go abroad to go to college because they couldn't get into a college in the US.

based on personal experience, I'd beg to differ on the whole thing...not all of us have are coming with a trust fund, so to speak.

Totally disagree with this. There are way more IM residency spots in the U.S. An average IMG will match somewhere. Fiscal issues aside, it's a major undertaking to have a U.S. medical school entertain a foreign applicant - and those that are interviewed generally have U.S. undergraduate degrees. From personal experience, it is almost impossible for an international with an undergraduate degree earned outside of North America to gain admission to a U.S. medical school.
