Hi
I am graduating soon and moving to Pasadena this fall with my family. I'm interested in a residency in pediatrics/family practice but, being a mother, I'm concerned about the long hours. Are working hours really so horrible? I've visited a few of the residency programs' sites but want some detailed information from someone who's actually there.
Thanks

I wish I could tell you what you wanted to hear but unfortunately, I can't. Residency in terms of hours is not easy. Mind you, with the 80 hour workweek limit, it may become more manageable. For the more busy rotations like wards, NICU, ER, you will definitely be working those hours (probably even more if the program does not follow the guidelines). Then again there are those elective roations where you will work 40 hours/wk tops, thus having more time to spend with your child/ren. Best advice, bring a family member along, a grandparent especially, who can help take care of your kids during the busy rotations. I know an IMG such as yourself who's husband lived on the mainland. She raised her 2 yr old daughter while going to residency on Hawaii. It was hard for her because she always needed to find a nanny/babysitter during her busy rotations..... but she managed somehow. Good luck and have a safe trip to the US.
