hello doctors,

i didnt find any perticular thread for imgs in obg/gyn. sorry if i missed one. i have completed medical school in 2014 dec from china. till now i havnt dont anything about usmle, just now i have started preparing for usmle. originally i was very interested in internal medicine but i always hated the fact that IM docs are called PCPs. i hate the word PRIMARY CARE. i believe IM is a very awesome branch but i am getting tired of listening that they are not expert of anything. the second branch i liked after IM was obg/gyn. i want to see if its possible for an IMG from china to match into academic programs. my concerns are as below.

1. is there a good portion of imgs in usa obg/gyn residency programs?
2. what is required from an img to match into obg/gyn?
3. can i match only with usmle scores [240+] and a good obervership? or other things like research, poster presentation, publications etc are must?
4. do programs accept male students?
5. is it possible to match in a university affiliated obg/gyn program for me?
5. should i even try? or may be i should just forget the idea of ogb/gyn in usa in this competitive scenario?

thanks all and please share your valuable knowledge and advice, this is important for me.

First of all, you are not considering OB/GYN for the right reasons. You like internal medicine, but because internists are considered primary care you don't want to go into the field? Your motivation is other people's perception of you? Sorry, that's just arrogance. For what it's worth, OB/GYN is often considered PRIMARY CARE since for many women, you are the only doctor they see. If you are 1) purely medicine-inclined and 2) sensitive about perceived prestige, you would be miserable in this field.

Things will go better for you if you are honest with yourself and figure that out before you apply. Getting a US spot will be extremely difficult anyway- you would need superstar stats, observership(s), and significant research time to even begin to get your foot in the door.
