Hello everyone, I'm currently a 3rd year medical student in a Non-US school(would be Non-US IMG).
My preferred specialty is Orthopaedics in any University Program.

I'd like to know what a successful IMG stats look like, and what to do to better my chances of matching et al.

Also, if you're chanced to know any IMG who matched Orthopaedics & the ones in your program, you can say one or two things about their stats.

Thanks.

Caveat: I will be making life decisions based on the advice I get from here.

Looks like two non-US IMGs (of ~18 who received interviews and submitted a rank list) matched ortho in 2018.

Read this, pg. 173:

US medical grad: bench + step 1 > 500.

Foreign medical grad: bench + step 1 > 600.
Don't get you, what do you mean?

What? Immediate DNR.

Kidding, lol. The joke is that your step 1 score plus your bench press has to be greater than 500 to match ortho. If you're an IMG, that number goes up 100 points in Tenk's version of the joke.

Step > 250 + several years of very productive research. And even then, it's REALLY hard to match as an IMG.

Lol, thanks slowthai.

It's extremely difficult. It depends on what school you're from. You'd need to do exceedingly well on the USMLE. You'd be much better off if you didn't need a visa. You'd need to do multiple years of research and be productive. And you'd need to get very lucky.

And, if you try this and it fails, you will have great difficulty getting any other spot in the US, since everyone will see all this ortho experience and realize that you don't want to do any other field.

It's a really bad idea.

A couple matched this year after doing research years at the institutions the ultimately matched at. Very, very poor prospects but it’s been done.

Thanks for your input.

That's really impressive.
Good thing.
You care to share more about other areas of their app or can I link up with'em?

Thanks.

Sorry, I don’t personally know them or much about them. I know about them from the reddit google doc for the 2019-2020 ortho applicant group. That google doc is locked but I believe in the chat section (or maybe advice to reapplicants section) they listed some info and maybe contact info. You should still be able to access that google doc. Shoot me a message if you can’t find it (or don’t know what I’m talking about) and I’ll try to send you a link.

Right away!
Thanks.

The IMGs that I've seen match ortho have:

- Strong Step scores
- Did a good amount of published research
- Performed well on away rotations

Those three things overall are the most common features I've seen in matched IMGs in ortho.

Thanks a lot.
