If Thymectomy is done in a neonate there is a compromise in both T-cell mediated n humoral immunity acc to a ques in released paper.......

can anyone explain how humoral immunity is affected?? n wat if thymectomy is done in an adult??

I don't have exact details but i believe the thymus is responsible for immunogenesis in the young, but adults can be fine without it. I hope someone else can shine more light on this.

yea ...dats true but how can it(thymectomy) affect humoral immunity??

6 months ago (when i took the NBDE) I could have given you a better answer, but the general idea is that in a functioning immune system T cells not only are involved in cell mediated immunity but modulate and enhance humoral immunity through several combinations of cytokines (a little foggy on the specifics). therefore when you are deficient in T cells, humoral immunity is also affected.

thanx 4 ur reply

i was reading now about thymus
it produces 2 hormones: thymosin and thymopeitin
and produce 2 factors: thymic factor and thymic humoral factor
and it is the site of maturation of T cells
may be this will help

humoral immunity is affected because T helper cells release alot of cytokines to trigger B-cell antibody production along with the usual cytotoxic T cells.

So if you take out the thymus, you get no t cells which would also mean a decrease in B cell production.

I READ ROBBINS COTRANS KUMAR CHAPTER 6 DAMMIT!!

yesss.........Interleukin-5 produced by T-cells promotes end stage maturation of B cells into plasma cells.
