This seems very broad, but when you inject an antigen that has not been in the body before, a primary immune response will result and memory cells will be formed. At the second injection, the lag phase will be removed due to the secondary response. A primary response will last anywhere from 4 - 10 days and a secondary 18 - 36 hours.
