So I have some questions about immunizations. Does anyone know about this two step TB test? Do you just get it done once then get it done again? And does anyone know if your school requires it done within a limited time of school starting? Where is everyone getting their drug screen done? I'm trying to get this all figured out because as of May 18 I won't be a student anymore and our student clinic is fairly cheap.

You have the first one done and read two days later. Then, you go back in two or three weeks and repeat the whole process. We had to have it within a year of matriculation. Then, we get one before rotations begin in year's three and four. I'm on the way to get the second one read now. Mt doc sent me to a place that does drug screens when I got my physical done.

yeah, youve got the idea for the TB tests. Injection, wait 3 or 4 days, have it read, get another injection, wait another few days, have it read again. The 2 step process is much more effective. A few years ago, my first test was difficult to read as a positive or negative because it was a little irritated after a few days, but after the second one, it was clear that I had a positive reaction. At my school, everything has to be done before the first day of school, but doesnt specify a deadline. I think they asked for us first rounders to get them in asap though.

Hmmm I wonder how much it costs for a TB test somewhere else. It's free at my school but of course it sounds like I'll have to go somewhere else for the second one.

Couldn't you go to your student clinic again and just pay for it even if you no longer are a student? I only had to pay $10 OOP (no insurance needed or anything) for the TB test at my university's student clinic. Otherwise it shouldn't be too expensive at your public health dept.

I have a question. With the MMR stuff, how do I get access to that stuff? My old pediatrician said it was destroyed?

You might be able to get your immunization history from the health department in the county that you recieved the shots. If you can't get a hold of your records, they can just take a blood titer to confirm immunity.

The history they said was destroyed after 8 years. I don't know how this is possible considering I had them give me a copy for the hospital gig I had.

If you still have the copies, I'd imagine that's good enough. I brought the handful of cards that I had from my original immunizations, a printout of immunizations from the health department (they were older than eight years, I don't know why they'd destroy them), and titer results from whatever I couldn't track down records for when going through my pre-employment things for the hospital I work at. It's not medical school, but I doubt it's any different.

Go now, the second one is 1-2 weeks after the first, so if you started on Monday, you would be done before school is over. My doctor charged something like $30 for the first test, then I went to my school for the second and it was free. Also, if you need titers done, I got them done at my school (nursing school price) for $75 as opposed to the $350 that the lab wanted.

You can also call your highschool they should have a copy

I'm in the same boat, but my school said that records from undergrad will work. My problem is actually with the chicken pox. I either have to have a letter from my doctor saying I had chicken pox, proof of vaccine or a titer. This was my mom's reaction to asking who my doctor was when I had it, "Um...why would I have taken you to see a doctor. It was only the chicken pox. The neighbor had it, I invited him over and two weeks to the day you broke out. Don't need a medical degree to to know that one."

Ah...I love my family!

So I did all my titers and stuff. I am immune, by history, to all the MMR viruses. I also got a positive antibody titer from work, but it was not quantitative, so I went to a local clinic to get my stuff drawn again. When they did it, they said that I was not immune to a couple of them, so I got the MMR vaccine today.

First of all, I'm autistic now. Next of all, that thing hurt. I've had tons of shots, and they never bother me. The nurse stuck this thing in my arm, and I'm thinking "ok, just another shot", and then she pushes the meds in, and **** this thing stings. That was a few hours ago, and my arm is still sore.

The whole process cost me a $20 copay, by the way. I don't know where all of you are going that they cost so much. The Land Rover dealership, perhaps?

My insurance will not cover the titers or any pre-school testing (excluded by most policies, you're lucky!). Anyways, my titers came back not immune for Hep B! I did the entire series years ago when I was working in a hospital. Nice to know that they wouldn't work if I was exposed! Anyways, got the first of that series over and it really hurt also! I have to go for the second on Monday and I don't want to🙁 I don't mind shots or needles at all either, I used to let all of the new nurses practice placing IV's in my hand, but that stupid shot hurt for hours.

So here's my sorry immunization tale, I had to get a repeat of my MMR and Tetanus shots which hurt like ****, but I couldn't get my tb test done the same day because I had to work the rest of the week and wouldn't be able to get it read. When I went back to my MD's offices to get the tb test they told me I couldn't get one within 6 weeks of the MMR or it would give a false positive but if I had gotten it the same day it would have been ok. Does this seem crazy to anybody else?

yeah, that does kinda seem weird. The only explanation I can think of is that if you get the tb test done the same day as your MMR, your body still wouldn't have produced any antibodies against the MMR( since it usually takes around 4-5 days for Ab to peak). Therefore, you wouldn't have any reaction against the MMR and your tb would be also normal.
This is just my guess, I may be wrong about this though!

LECOM-E CLASS OF 2012!!!!🙂

Ha ha. That was awesome. I know people that actually buy into this.

Edit: These same people took their son to the chiropractor to cure his aspergers.

So thanks for the input everyone. I scheduled to get the tetanus and first Hep B shot on Wednesday. Does anyone know if it matters if I get the Td or DTaP? So she said that for the second Hep shot I would have to pay regular price which is $90. She was confused about why AZCOM would want me to get the two step TB test rather than just one but I went ahead and scheduled the first one and I figured I could deal with the other one later. I have to get my titers too. This may sound stupid but can you get an MMR titer? Or is there only a measles titer, a mumps titer and a rubella titer? Oh and she said most students wait to get the physical at the med school they will be attending because it would be free at the student clinic. My response is huh?

Yeah, I got a stupid response like that from my student health center also, but I think they are used to nursing students.

For some reason, they break out the MMR titers into individual parts. I think it's pretty standard to get the two step TB because if you get a marginal response the first time, or even a false negative, the second one is much more sensative, and more acurate. You don't want your doctor giving you TB!

Just a few more hoops to jump through in this long long arduous process of degrading and bankrupting ourselves to start medical school.

They beat us down, take our money, kill our spirit, then if you are lucky enough to still be standing at the end of the day, you get to help someone else. Can you tell I'm in a bit of a crappy mood today?!

You wouldn't believe how many women in my mom's group feel that Autism is directly caused by the mercury in immunizations, and thing that they shouldn't immunize their children (and that I'm a bad mom for immunizing my poor defenseless baby). I don't know how many times I've had to explain that 1) studies show that mercury is not a factor in the increased rates of Autism, and 2) almost all immunizations are now thermisol free! (the only exception right now being the Flu shot). 3) The increased incidence of Autism may possible be caused by the increase in older maternal age and the broadened diagnosis of "Autism spectrum disorders" where people used to be just "LD" or have pervasive development disorder, etc.

(BTW, This coming from a person who has an uncle that died of a rare auto-immune disease that was offset by a polio vaccine.) If your kid is pre-disposed to an auto-immune disease, a common cold could set it off just as easilly as an immunization.

OK sorry.... getting off high horse, but still in a bad mood!

As someone who has an autoimmune disease I will second the notion that if you are pre-disposed to an autoimmune disease, sneezing the wrong way can cause it to flare up, just as much as an immunization.

I actually have done alot of work in the autism field and dealt with alot of parents, First off, it is important to differentiate what I call 'structural autsim' in which the frontal lobe of the brain is actually structurally different and 'enviromental autism' in which the 'mercury in vaccine' dogmas abound.

I would say more often then not, at least with the kids i have dealt with, Moms of 'eviromentally autistic' kids had some sort of trauma right before or during pregnancy, bladder infections, antibiotic overload, ect. ect.

Anyway, back on topic
