For the nontrads who are not enrolled in a school this year...where are you going to get the required vaccinations for med school? I was thinking my local health department would be the cheapest.

I'm sure it varies, but I believe some med schools give you Hep B, etc. right when you start...or, sometimes those vaccinations are covered by insurance (or might be under your student insurance).

I got my hep b series for free through a hospice where I volunteered. 🙂 If you're volunteering, see if that's an option. The health dept. or your school clinic is generally your best bet because insurance really night not cover all the stuff -- I know you young guys think insurance covers everything your doctor submits, but it's so not true. If your insurance company doesn't deem the shots to be medically necessary (and they night not be), you're stuck with the bill.

Here's what my school required --
tb test
hep b series (this could be completed after matriculation)
2 mmr's
2 tetanus shots, one within the last 10 years
varicella (chickenpox) vaccine or titer showing immunity

Hey, I only said sometimes insurance will cover it, I didn't say always....most people I know assume that vaccinations are NOT covered by insurance. 🙂 I've had about 4 different insurance plans and they have covered the garden variety stuff like Hep B and TB screens, but yes, it's irresponsible not to know what your plan covers.

A lot of the hospitals around here give their volunteers free immunizations - I'm not to med school yet, but I'm hoping that's how I will get mine.

HepA is not generally one of the vaccines you get. Hep B is. Many nontrads have HMO/health insurance plans, so many will have gone to their own internist/PCP.
