we've all heard horror stories of interviewers who are non-responsive, rude, and the like. thankfully, i had an interviewer who was very warm and outgoing -- someone who i thought would do a good job representing me to the rest of the admissions committee. how much of an impact do you guys think the interviewer's personality plays in to portraying you as an applicant?

Fortunately for the interviewer, his/her task is rather simple and is not a function of his/her personality. It is either a 👍 or a 👎.

As Doc said, it's really not their job to make you feel comfortable so it is up to the interviewee to make light of the conversation. If they are non-responsive and dull just keep talking and answering questions. Don't take it as they don't like you or your answer. One of my student interviewers was like that because they had been yanked from their clinicals to interview me. I wouldn't be exceptionally happy either. I just answered all her questions with a smile and when an opportunity arose, tried to make small talk. She wasn't too responsive, so i just followed her lead. I don't think it makes you look bad, it just makes you feel like you had a bad interview afterward.

I believe interviewers personality plays a huge role in your interview success. If your and and your interviewer's personalities differ a lot, I highly doubt the interviewer will be able to assess your skills without bias.
Although I am sure there are regulations and rules to minimize biasing and prejudices.

I also believe it plays a huge role, sometimes you mesh well and click with interviewers and other times not so much. When you click well with them it seems to be a smoother interview and i think they see you in a better light. Its all luck of the draw...so when schools use different interviewers sometimes you get lucky and other times not so much.

Definitely matters. You just have to try to make the most of the situation.

True. But to the OP, you must realize (if you haven't so already) that a 👍 interview alone will rarely mean that you must be accepted.

Alot of applicants mistakenly cultivate some animosity toward their interviewers following not-so-great results.

In reality, a committee reviews your entire file. No doubt the interview is huge, but, having the rest of your stuff portray you as the ideal candidate will most likely secure your acceptance.

I agree it makes a big difference. I had one horrible interviewer and it made for an incredibly awkward experience and don't think I had the chance to show the interviewer my personality and assets that would be valuable for the school.
