I was having a casual chat today with one of the dentists in the practice I have recently joined and he told me that there was this implant course in Cuba which is rather spectactular. It really blew my mind! 🙂

Apparently, in this one week course ( $10,000-relatively less expensive than other implant courses I have heard about), a dentist will have the opportunity to place as many as 50 implants in patients!!! 😱 The dentist also told me that he was rather impressed with the quality of surgery exhibited by the Cuban oral surgeons.

I don't think there are any similar on hands courses offered in the US ( I have heard usually not more than placing a few implants in one given course). I think the reason why there is such a great potential to place so many implants in such a course is related to the medical system which exists in Cuba.

Obviously, as a recent graduate from dental school I would not want to go ahead and place implants right away. I need to feel comfortable with restoring implants but I was curious if anyone has heard of courses which offer something similar to the one I mentioned in this post.

NYU has one but its 2 years long and you need a minimum of 2 years work experience.

Thanks !

Did you take that course?

nope. But my dads partner did. The cost was about 25k but they gave you about $20k in equipment and materials. So taking the course kinda paid for itself. And since then he's done about 100k in billing. So yeah it was well worth it.

Loma Linda is supposed to have the best implantology program in the US. At least thats the rumor.

I heard NYU was the first in the nation and the best in the world.

i hope its not too late for you to know that travelling to Cuba with a US passport is illegal! you may want to try out the same course in jamaica or any other carribean island and party as well 😉

Its not a joke at all.

NYU is one of the top 5 funded dental research schools. Why wouldn't it be good?

It's not rumor, it's fact.

UCLA has an exceptional implant clinic. It's director Dr. Moy is known the world over. Unfortunately they only take 1 fellow per year and that person must be an OMS.

I son't have to worry about problems with a US passport because I AM A CANUCK!!!!! LOL! 😀 I have been to Cuba on one occasion (Santa Maria del Mar - about 30min drive from Havana) and it was THE best holiday of my life. It is also one of the safest places to travel . You have armed guards at the beaches even when there are beach parties as late as 2am. It is also very inexpensive. Well, I have known of americans who have somehow managed to get to Cuba, I think by way of Canada. I don't know, don't ask me 😀

I would very much discourage anyone from going to Cuba if they ever wish to visit, do business in or most of all apply for citizenship in the US. If a person has travelled to cuba, they are automatically out of contention for permanenet residency in the US (unless the person is of cuban origin who is applying for political asylum).
Canadians who have been to Cuba may be able to visit the US provided the customs agent at the border does not flip through the back pages of the passport to see the cuban visa. However, when applying for a work visa or anything of that sort you will be denied. True, there are cases where people have hired immigration attorneys to help out with this situation, but trust me, it is not worth it.
There are similar courses offered in Jamaica and other carribean islands. Implantology is also very well researched science in Brazil, and they too offer some great courses.

"Fact"? As determined by what? That's what I thought.

What's with the attitude? Seriously.

Fact as it is the program that is widely acknowledged as the best. It was the first, it has graduated many leaders in the implant world, and it has many landmark publications as does NYU. I know both programs very well and although NYU has some obvious big names, LLU is the better training program with some big names of its own.

I've heard there is no problem with US citizens travelling to Cuba. You simply fly to somewhere nearby and then fly to Cuba. They put a stamp on loose paper and slip it into your passport, so there is no record of you visiting Cuba in your passport. US customs never knows. Everyone is happy. Of course Brazil and Jamaica would be epic as well. Vida Loca!!

Fair enough. I went a little overboard with the snippiness. Submitting any school is unequivocally "the best" at anything is a pretty tough claim to support, though. Since I don't know beans about LLU myself, I'd be interested to see some of what you're basing the claim on.

Like I said, it is widely acknowledged as the best implant program within the implant world. NYU may have a higher profile because of Tarnow (who is rarely there) and its size. I believe they accept ~10 residents/year while LLU accepts 2-3. NYU is also 2 years while LLU is 3.
