Importance of Basic Science Research?

How important is basic science research to match well in a competitive residency? Is clinical research just as good (or better) than basic science, or do people suggest basic science research too?

It's nice if you have it but nobody will miss it if you don't. I can't think of any specialty where research is expected to be a component of your application.
