In FA this is one of the shortest organ sections. Yet Goljan spends far more time on it than any other organ system (double cardio and 4 times renal!!), putting way, way, way more emphasis on clotting and anemia stuff especially.

Is Goljan's heme/onc fetish a legitimate use of time or is the FA level of detail more appropriate to the amount of heme/onc on the boards?

If i'm not mistaken, Goljan makes quite a few integrations with gastro problems, mol. bio etc. In addition, FA only states things like TTP / ITP / HUS whereas Goljan takes the time to explain their varying aetiologies/presentations (particularly true about haptoglobin). As well, importance doesn't necessarily correlate with how many pages of FA a subject is covered in. A great example of this is the molecular biology section.

I can only add to the above by saying take everyones advice (including mine) with a pinch of salt on here, there are so many opinions flying around here as well as anecdotal recollections of personal exam experience. So at the end of the day I guess its upto you how much haem/oncology you want to study.

goljan spent so much time on heme/onc i believe its bc many students have a hard time understanding that topic thus the emphasis. all of my heme onc qs on my exam, i am 100% that i got the correct bc of the way goljan presented it, esp all the leukemias and lymphoma
