How important is microscopy on step 1? Lots of path slides? I hate that stuff so I am wondering how seriously I need to take it.

Will they describe the characteristics in the question stem?

Very important. There are a good number of slides on the test and according to the recent trend there will not be many (if any) clues in the question stem.
It is just like heart sound questions where there will not be any clues in the question stem and you have to answer solely based on the heart sound.

fa + qbanks is probably enough. but if you want to delve deeper these are some pretty good sites i used alongside m1 and m2 coursework respectively

My understanding is that histo shows up in the context of path. Won't knowing the pathology be sufficient for images?

There is no way I am going to look at normal histo images.
