How important REALLY are they? I go to a small, private, liberal arts school in Ohio, which happens to be expensive (like all private schools), and am a little bit confused on how important they are. I don't know if I can get one due to the fact that I need to work to help pay for school (I work one full time job in the summer and 3 part time ones at my school during the school year). Do schools understand that not everyone can get an internship due to financial reasons??

I KNOW there are some high paying internships out there, but I haven't found, and won't find, any that come close to paying the amount that my job does (~$8,000). Thoughts??

what are you talking about? ... research?

What? I don't think med schools particularly care if you have internships or not...?

I apologize for obviously not being clear enough. My professors consistently push me to look for internships (Research-based) as a job replacement over the summer. We are constantly getting flyers and updates for opportunities in our area to do these internships and it gives me the impression they are important (or somewhat at least) for medical school admission.

yes research helps a lot for admissions, especially at research-heavy med schools. you might be working full-time, but med schools still wont know much about you if you dont have adequate volunteering, clinical experience, research, etc. thus, you will be at a disadvantage. that is why medicine is a "rich man's" field.
