Importance of interview in ranking?

Honestly, why does this question matter? If you flub your interview day, there's nothing you can do to change it. If you do fantastic, then great! But people do end up lower on their rank list than they expected despit thinking that the interview day went well. There are only a certain number of slots in each program, and plenty more candidates than slots.

I know this is a basic question that has probably been asked before, but exactly how important is interview performance in determining the rank position of a residency applicant? Suppose applicant A has excellent grades and board scores, but seems aloof or awkward on interview day, whereas applicant B (who only gets an interview when a spot opens up after a stronger applicant cancels) has mediocre grades and board scores, but comes across well on interview day. Who would probably end up being ranked higher - applicant A or applicant B?

Every program is a bit different but frankly at the places I've been, if we didn't like you personally you might not be ranked at all, even if your stats were top notch. Aloof, disinterested , arrogant, annoying, creepy are examples of things that can make you free fall on a rank list. Awkward and nervous, to a degree isn't nearly as fatal but could still rub certain people the wrong way. Don't phone it in -- the interview matters a lot. We aren't going to be working with your step 1 scores, and this is our window to see who we will be sharing the trenches with for the next 3+ years.
