i just got verified this weekend and see that my science and overall gpa are both over a 3.0, but my non science is coming in at a 2.986. i know this is pretty cruddy, but i really messed up some basic rhetoric and greek civ courses my freshman year which hurt my gpa later. i did relatively well ( b's and higher ) in most my courses through the rest of college. my science courses are fine....so i dont know, does the non - science gpa matter? or are the overall and science the only important ones?

thanks..

i think they just throw in non-science in there just cuz they can. i mean, medschools will glance at it, but they're not gonna say, "man this kid's non-science GPA is .0001 away"

you know what i mean?...at least i dont think it should be that big of a deal

Only problem is that it is .0001 away from being a mediocre number at best. 3.0 isn't exactly a competitive non-science GPA to begin with.

at least he has the balls to apply...some people shrug it off and dont even try for medschool

+1 for orangr85

I'd say if anyone has balls for applying, it's the Triathlete. His numbers are "unique," to say the least, but I've got the funny feeling that he will get in anyway.

Better to save money than throw it out the window, not? I don't think the GPA will tank him, but those with GPAs that will should realize not to waste money.

Indeed, my friend.

I got allo interviews with these numbers and no clinical experience last time I applied. I now have tons of clinical experience, and a better idea of which schools to apply to. I think I will get in too, but its just going to depend on who reads my application. I don't think you can look at what I've done and say I can't hack it in med school. Its just going to come down to them being able to justify giving a spot to me over someone who has done it right from the very beginning.

And that's why I like a lot of these DO schools... They like the non-trads

meatwad and friend, your responses are rather unnecessary and lame. I didnt ask for your opinion as to whether i should apply or not, but only if the non-science gpa is something med schools look at. I have a strong MCAT score, excellent extracurrics, and a Masters Degree with A current 4.0 average. I have 3 interviews on the table, so save the "your gpa is weak" garbage for elsewhere.

thanks to the rest of you for the input 👍

I never directly responded to your initial post; I responded to Tensyle, who made a statement that implied that your GPA was .0001 away from a 3.0 This made the implication that a 3.0 is what one needs to get in. You are obviously quite insecure due to your GPA, so whenever someone comes along that doesn't tell you what a champ you are, you get defensive and tell them to leave your thread. Good luck getting far with that attitude towards criticism.

I'm sure you know what you can do with that 👍 you posted.

Yes, I'm not elated about a 3.1 science gpa, and a less than 3.0 non science Hence My initial post about whether or not this will be raise an eyebrow from adcoms. Regardless, I don't appreciate the immaturity of your comments. This forum isn't about putting others down, it's about helping each other out.

p.s. - > if you did feel compelled to comment on my chances at admission, one would think you would consider factors such as mcat, ec's, etc, before commenting. in any case, to each his own.

Depends on the school really. Some will not look favorably upon it, while others may be more forgiving and notice your science gpa. The caution is that both are on the low end of cutoffs for most schools so that's a flag already. Your MCAT needs to come into play heavy here.

I would try to take more non-science basic courses in other fields. Take a few 100 level courses in social sciences and humanities. Usually these coureses are pretty easy. Get good advice on professors from fellow students. A professor can make the difference between getting an A or a C in a course. Besides boosting your GPA you will being showing the med schools that you are a well rounded person who has basic knoweledge in multiple disciplines. I would take the extra year in college and boost that overall GPA. I hope you are accepted to the school of your choice. Good Luck!!!!:luck::luck::luck:

I'd have to disagree here. Taking 100 level courses this late in the game is a sure sign of gpa padding. No one will buy it and it will look like you aren't willing to put in the effort to succeed in upper-level courses. Medical schools aren't interested in how you did in intro to college, they are interested in your performance at more demanding courses.

We agree to disagree. His problem in his GPA was from 100 level course work during his first year in college. Therefore fix the problem. In terms of handling higher level course work he did that after his first year and did OK.

It's a bit too late in the game for me to take 100 level courses right now, as I'm in a pretty fast paced and time consuming Masters program. If i don't get in this year, i will definitely take a few easy ( and hard ) classes to boost up my gpa next summer.

thanks for the advice.
