My understanding is that Canadian medical students who complete a Canadian residency can only practice in the US if they write the USMLE to obtain an H-1B visa (LMCC is equivalent to USMLE for licensure in many provinces). Do your USMLE scores matter when applying for jobs in competitive specialties in the US, or would it be possible to write the USMLE during or after residency, just with the intention of getting a passing mark to get the visa? Also, would employers look at your MCCQE scores?

Almost no one will ever see your scores once you finish training. You have to submit a score report eAch time you apply for a license or privileges, but it goes to the state medical board/ the hospital HR, not your partners. Many places haw restrictions on the number of attempts, but a pass is a pass.

Some of the prestigious fellowship programs might consider Step 3 scores. Other than that, the only thing future employers will care about is that you passed and have a license.

I have 3 state licenses and privileges at 8 hospitals and have never been asked for my score report. The application usually asks for the date the exam was taken and Pass/Fail; I've never seen a request for the actual score.

The state boards usually ask for you to pay to send them an official USMLE transcript. That includes scores.

Perhaps that is true and I have just forgotten about it. I can say definitely however that it has not been a condition of the hospital privileges and I only needed to report a pass or fail.

I also don't recall having to send scores in to either state I am licensed in. I think I had to fill in a box in one state stating how many attempts it took to pass each step though.

Thats a pretty novel concept in this board.

It's probably more to check that you've taken the USMLE and actually passed them - hence an official USMLE transcript. Anyone can falsify and say they passed when they didn't.
