IMPORTANT formatting question regarding personal statement In order to save character spaces I left no space after periods and commas. Is this ok? I mean, would it be considered an error? I know the essay must be free of errors. I would greatly appreciate your input!

Well,I think it is a great idea, however, others might not because it is odd, messy, and annoying to read.

I don't think that is such a great idea. Instead of trying to bend the rules...just cut out a couple words or sentences. Adcoms might get annoyed especially since they are reading hundreds of essays. If you're having trouble finding something to cut out...have someone else read it and tell you what they think is the least important sentence.

ok, but i dont wanna take out more than a sentence and i know there should be two spaces after periods...if i put only one space would that be ok? it will be easier to read than having no spaces. your input will be appreciated.

two spaces? really?
i guess i have been bending the rules without knowing!

but yeah buddy, chop chop.
dont make adcoms mad. at any cost.

one space after a period is proper (or so I've learned my whole life)... I've never heard of anyone putting two....

Two is fancy by English majors.

What? You really have been putting one space between sentences your whole life?

Very funny. Pinkies up!

BTW, I can tell you from experience that there is nothing worse to an English major than making up your own formatting-- it sucks when you have a nice clean pile of 12 pt, Times font, double spaced papers in front of you, and one dipsh*t kid decides he wants to write in 9 pt, single spaced fancy-pants font with the margins 3 inches wide. Ruins my day. Adcoms want everything in the same format for a reason; it makes everything simpler to read. Don't make them annoyed before they even start reading.

my whole life, i've been told to insert 2 spaces after a period. for my personal statement, i choose to use 1 space because i didn't want to have to take out anymore sentences. it felt as though i was going against everything i had learned when i submitted my app with only 1 space after periods.

I was always taught 2 spaces after periods and one after commas.

I was always taught the same and was shocked to see that some people actually were taught to use one space. So I googled it and it turns out that this seems to be somewhat controversial and evidently people are moving towards one space between sentences. GPO Style manual and Chicago Manual of Style say one space. MLA says either is acceptable. I always thought everybody just put two spaces, I had no idea!

Ahhh! Hmm. I guess I will do two spaces unless I need room. 🙂
