A major PBM’s allegedly abusive audit practices were exposed this morning by the Washington Post, one of the country’s most respected papers and the paper of record for many elected officials and staff. As the Post reports, CVS Caremark has allegedly abused its power against a respected, independent community pharmacy in Washington, DC resulting in the cancellation of the pharmacy’s contract with the PBM which could force this neighborhood establishment to close. CVS Caremark is directing their patients to other pharmacies, INCLUDING THEIR OWN CVS LOCATIONS.
The article further referred to pending congressional legislation to rein in PBM abusive practices. Email or call your members of Congress and urge them to support H.R. 1971/S. 1058 the Pharmacy Competition and Consumer Choice Act of 2011. Act today while the iron is hot! Click here to send an email to your Representative, here to send an email to your two Senators, and here to look up their office phone numbers.
Highlights from the article include:
- The pharmacist has been audited 6 times in the past 2 years by various PBMs and passed them all, EXCEPT FOR CVS CAREMARK
- NCPA’s PBM concerns are cited and NCPA’s Advocacy Center's John Coster says “PBM audits are focusing a lot of attention on technical violations, the low-hanging fruit, when they should be looking at true fraud.”
- The FTC and attorneys general from more than 20 states and the District of Columbia are investigating CVS Caremark
- The independent community pharmacy targeted has been a neighborhood institution since 1924 and owned by the same pharmacist for the last 36 years
- Patient testimonials about the service the pharmacy provides, such as free home delivery for which many patients rely, including a retired pharmacist who is now a patient

PLEASE SEND YOUR EMAIL OR CALL YOUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS TODAY AND TELL THEM TO END THE ABUSE EXPOSED BY THE WASHINGTON POST BEFORE MORE ESTABLISHED COMMUNITY BUSINESSES ARE FORCED OUT OF BUSINESS DUE TO PBM ABUSE AND SUPPORT H.R. 1971/S. 1058, The PHARMMACY COMPETITION AND CONSUMER CHOICE ACT OF 2011!!!
