Hey everyone,
Maybe some of you all know someone this happened to. I was fairly sure about my chances of getting into dental school, but now I am very unsure. I have a 3.4 gpa from Vanderbilt Univ. and scored a 22/20 on the DAT. However, I have recently been charged with cheating. I let my roommate copy off my Physical Chemistry Lab Final (1 hour course), and will now recieve a F in the course along with him, which will be on my transcript. How do dental schools look on this and do you know of incidences where they accept students and give them a second chance? I am just wondering whether this scar on my record should stop me from applying after this semester (because I have no shot anymore) or whether or not I still have a chance to get in? My friends told me that I still have a chance because my scores are slightly above average, but they are not as informed as you guys. Any help would be appreciated. I really want to go into dentistry, but am worried that I have no shot anymore.

Wow, I realize this is a really compromising situation to be in...its just really sad b/c you had good intentions, and I think thats why we all really feel for you. Honestly, it seems like the adcoms don't look at everything in black and white. They realize that there are extenuating circumstances. Especially since you are applying to your state school, and state school generally like their in-state applicants, I'm thinking that your gpa and dat are strong enough to land you an interview. There's no doubt in my mind, though, that the F will come up during the interview, whether or not cheating is specified on your transcript. You would be a lot worse off if you were the one that was doing the copying, but I think if you explain yourself well enough, and stay sincere and honest, there is hope! 🙂 Best of luck to you and stop optimisitic!

If your prehealth profession committee experience is anything like mine was (although I went to a public school so this is expected), they will have you bring them your records (in the form of a transcript). If that is the case, then I am guessing that they will not know of your cheating. If this in fact the case, I think griffin04's advice sound good. (Don't bring up the incident if you don't have to.) Do u have any friends that have already been in front of prehealth profession committtee who can tell you about what you have to provide for the committe?
