Hello,

I have a question to ask on behalf of my dad.

He graduated as a Doctor in Dental Surgery from a university in Mexico (Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez) in 1984. We moved to the US about 4 years ago, and he has since gotten all his paperwork translated (he is a US citizen, born here but raised in Mexico, so no problems in that aspect).

The only problem is he isn't certified yet, and he can't practice, so right now he's working a completely unrelated job that doesn't pay even 1/5 of what an average dentist would make. He asked about getting credit or a faster certification as a dental hygienist/assistant in the meantime, but they told him the shortest is 2 years (apparently the classes on his transcript don't count for any of these shorter paths, since they're more advanced...).

Does anyone know how he can get certified to practice here?

I was told something about a 2 yr. long sort of residence program, but will he be getting paid during this period?? (like medical residents), because he of course has a family to support.

If anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated.

Well i think ur dad needs to get the licence to practice dentistry in US for which he might have to take the advanced standing program (also known as International dentist program etc) which is a two year thing.
It also depends on what state u r in. If i would have been at ur pace i would have called the state dental board and talked to them directly to know further options.
Hope it helps.
🙂

does he have experience as a dentist since then back in mexico?

1. in minnesota as i understand you can get license without any additional school.
2. he can do 2 year residency program and then pass national boards part 1&2, then regional examination (if you are in texas - WREB) and get license. in texas (at least couple years ago) it had to be specialty residency program (perio, prostho). for other states you can do also AEGD and GPR programs. usually they pay 2-3k a month.
my wife is dentist from mexico city 🙂
PM me if any questions.

Yes, he had his own dental office back there. But he hasn't practiced for the last 4-5 years.
