Hi I was wondering how much emphasis residency programs place on research specific to the program you are applying for. I'm interested in neurology but I have an opportunity to do opthalmology research through a program I applied for, they match you to someone with similar interests. I was planning on doing neurology research at a nearby MD hospital but due to covid I wasn't able to do that. This will likely be the only chance I have to do research this summer so I wanted to see if programs have a preference on the type of research applicants do. I know surgical fields care, but do fields like neuro and IM care at all? And if so should I try to get some neuro specific research in my third year? Thanks!

Thank you for the response! I will keep that in mind once I start this summer!

Neuro and IM largely do not care about research.
But having some is always another box ticked over others.

Anecdotal but my seniors that matched Neuro have consistently told me they felt published research was one of the key things that helped them match.
It's also probably going to be more important now that Step/Level 1 are P/F.

Some is better than none, but specialty specific is better.

I disagree about ‘not caring,’ they definitely care, but people can still match without. Honestly if IM didn’t have so many slots, I doubt people could match without research.

Depends on the field honestly. The ultra competitive specialties will want to see specific research, others will just want to see you be productive. Research output will always help you

I mean neuro is super uncompetitive, but sure research is required for Cleveland Clinic neuro

I've heard that some people do research their third year, how common is this? I genuinely like research so I'm interested in doing as much as possible thanks!
