hey everyone

i have an improtant question

im trying to help my friend apply to medical school (i got into nycom already)

his mcat scores were a 10, 12, 14
his gpa is in the mid 2's range
he got C's in his pre med classes with teh exception of chem 1 (A) and orgo 2(A)

does he have a good chance of getting into the medical school in mexico? or any other school for that matter

how does someone do that, do not so well in school, and get an great score on the mcat...

hmmm...i wish i knew what to say...what kind of gpa do the carib. schools look for?...maybe that mcat can offset it?

He should definitely go for it after he has had a chance to show how well he can perform in his classes. There was one case that our Dr. Phillips (a dean at Baylor College of Medicine) told us about where a kid scored unbelievably well on the MCAT but had poor grades. So he was not accepted anywhere, and doctor Phillips said that schools did not accept him because "his grades do not refelect his MCAT score."

But tell your friend to not give up if this is his dream!

Why hasn't he contacted the Adcoms for the mexico school to see if his stats are sufficient for review?

I would suggest that he apply to a post bac program. There are a ton of posts on suggested schools (Gtown, RFP, Drexel, EVMS, UPenn). Some of these require a 2.75 or 3.0 GPA which would probably exclude him unless he still has a year to go and can potentially bring it up somewhat next semester.

I agree. Take a year or two to improve yourself and try to get into a U.S. school, before looking at other options.

IMGs only have about a 30% chance of practicing medicine in the U.S. (50-55% first-time pass rate on the UMSMLE, 50-60% chance of getting into a U.S. residency if they pass the USMLE). The success rate is actually a bit lower for U.S. residents who study overseas (50% first-time USMLE pass rate for American-born IMGs, vs. 55% for foreign-born IMGs).

Hey. Where did you find those stats? Only around 50%? That's too bad.
