So at the immature age of 18 I got two C's in General Chem when beginning college at a UC. Since then I have maintained a 3.9 for my final two years, graduated with a BS, and was all geared-up to re-take those two at a CC in order to make myself more competitive; however, the Education Code of California does not permit this unless you got a C- or lower. Thus, I am left debating all possibilities to 'offset' these two grades. What can a California student do?

One option is the PCAT, but California schools do not even consider these scores (although I've heard USC will look at them). Do you guys know if any of the other Cali schools will even so much as glance at good PCAT scores?

If not what other options are there?

Most institutions won't let you retake C's at the same institution, BUT there isn't a problem retaking classes at another institution, such as a JC/CC. However, it will depend on the pharmacy school you are applying to as to whether they will replace the C or average it out.

Btw, its becoming almost routine for people to retake some classes after undergrad to become a little more competitive.

So retake those C's, if you have the time and money to do so.

Hmm...I graduated from a UC and went to take these two courses at a local JC and they denied me permission to do so. Frustrating.

Did you tell them you have a BS. If you have a bachelors, you can take whatever class you want. Go back to that jc or go to another JC, and say you already have a bachelor and you want to enroll in so n so classes.

How do you think non-traditional students (like me) are able to go back to school.

P.S. I'm from socal, so i know jc/cc will let you do it.

I think you as well as the school misunderstood. You aren't trying to take classes to transfer to the university right? No. You are just trying to retake classes. University's set a cap on how many credits you can transfer from CC's. I believe at my local CC you can transfer up to 60 for a specific degree.... But it varies by degree.

I assume that was the confusion. Because if you already have a degree, they probably wont let you transfer the credits as there is no point. But you can retake the classes at the CC and you'll just have a completely separate transcript that will need to be sent to pharmcas. Hope that helps.

3.9 is more than enough to overshadow those 2 C's...so why are you complaining?

He's stating that the last 2 years were a 3.9, not his cum. gpa

In my opinon, earning a 3.9 your last two years at a UC more than adequately shows that you can excel in your courses, and I honestly don't think you need to re-take those C's. It seems like a waste of time to me and you might be better off using that time volunteering in a pharmacy etc. that can help you out when it comes interview time.

Also, I agree with some of the other posters that there must have been a misunderstanding with the CC. I don't see any reason why they wouldn't allow you to re-take those classes if you really wanted to. I've never had an issue but I really didn't get into the specifics with the school about why I was re-taking a course. I just enrolled in the class.

I'm also wondering about this as well. I have C's in several classes that i would love to retake as course forgiveness, but unfortunately the cutoff is set to a C-..

what were your grades in organic chem?
if they were As or Bs, i think one could see that you improved and maybe just had a rough start as a freshman.
you could also explain those Cs at the interview or in one of your letters that go along with the application if you really think it's necessary to do so.
