Currently I am a gen chem tutor and am doing research. I'm hoping to get an undergraduate research grant and poster presentation out of this. I have and will continue to coach basketball for little kids at the local rec center. I am also planning to shadow and become a hospice volunteer. Based on the SDN threads I've read, I feel like I have pretty average/subpar ECs. Anybody have any suggestions that could improve my app?

i think being a hospice volunteer sounds like a great experience. maybe try volunteering at your local food bank as well - i was asked at one of my interviews why i didn't have non-medical volunteer work listed on my application.

Do what you have above + one thing you really care about, like so much that you would do it even if you were not applying to medical school. Even if it's making fishtanks, rock-climbing, or becoming a fashion model. Having something like this is what makes your app "yours".

Consider a peer leadership gig. Especially if you might be a candidate for the more-selective med schools.

And include hobbies and/or artistic endeavors.
