I would like to work on my social/public speaking skills - for professional purposes as well as for med school interview purposes. Does anyone have experience with Toastmaster groups? Is it worth it or would my time be better allocated doing something else. I go to a school 45 minutes away from UC Berkeley where there seems to be a few Toastmaster groups on campus open to the public. There are no groups in my immediate area. Would it be worth it to drive down there 1-2 times a month. It would also be a good place to make solid connections. Thoughts?

email some old professors/premed advisors/friends and ask them to mock interview you. give them a list of 25-30 common questions asked at med school interviews, as well as another 5-10 that are particularly geared toward your application (ex. if you did research, explain some questions about that. if you took the MCAT more than once/had a poor GPA, etc).

I did 3 of these a week until my first interview and was set. Was accepted at all schools I interviewed at and felt very comfortable with being able to explain my application/why medicine. Practice is perfect.

Toastmasters is good, but it's more for speeches imo. Not saying that the skills wont be directly related, but you also want to learn the skill/start testing out your answers SPECIFICALLY for medical school admissions.

Good luck!

Take some acting or debate classes

-mock interviews with advisors (best option). If you can’t do this get creative and put yourself into uncomfortable situations such as
-online dates
-job interviews
-asking strangers where good restaurants are in town and if they want to grab lunch

Online dates? I feel like it’s a lot more comfortable than interviews lol

Try to pick up girls/guys at a bar. You may laugh at this but if you can talk to a complete random person like that you will be more than socially adept to interview well
