In 1st year GS, do you need to take both Step 3 and ABSITE before year end?

I have a short question about post-medical school.. In 1st year of a residency, say you are GS preliminary, do you need to take both Step 3 and ABSITE? Are all programs the same?

Also, while I am at it, I noticed the statistics for passing the board exam are published by absurgery.org by program, I think i am interpreting some of these 1st time passing rates correctly per program? Some seem kind of low, how to interpret.. sorry, I ask hard questions..

If you are planning on a career in surgery/trying to find a categorical position, you'll need to take the ABSITE. Most of our prelims do take Step 3 as interns as well.

And yes you are interpreting those results correctly. But it is only first-time attempt rates.

All programs are not the same. As noted above, if you are planning a career in general surgery then you will have to take the ABSITE. If however, you are continuing your training on in another surgical or nonsurgical subspecialty the requirement to take this exam will vary by department and program.

Most programs require you to have passed USMLE Step 3 before the end of PGY 2. Whether they make you take it during your first year again will be program dependent.

thanks for this...

Sorry, I need to ask.. in your opinion.., should someone who is in mid-40's be considering a surgery residency.. ?

Have you seen successful and unsuccessful examples in your past?
