I figure this is a perfect place to get a sure-fire response. Please help as I know the experts on the forum have see someone else in my situation. Heres the breakdown,

August 2004 - MCAT 22N - 5(V) 7(P) 9(B)
April 2005 - MCAT 22Q - 6(V) 9(P) 8(B)
August 2005 - MCAT 26Q - 6(V) 10(P) 10(B)

The sad thing is...I put more time into Verbal than any of the sciences combined. I just cant get out of the verbal nightmare. Ive done every review companies verbal exercies. Kaplan/TPR/EK...

I hear overall, a 26Q is not bad for an interview, but the 6 is a blemish and i know it.

The rest of my app is solid. 3.7 science GPA in microbio major, 3.9 gpa for last 60 credits.

Extras: Did a medical misisons trip to South Africa for 3 weeks. Job shadowing for 6 months (w/ LOR). Worked for Hospice organization for 2 years and did volunteering for them as well. Director for the American medical student association at my local school chapter. Involved in tennis club, ping pong club...digital photography hobby.

I consider myself very well rounded. Ive travelled around the world a lot and seen many places.

I'm not an URM, but i was born in South Africa and always had a problem with verbal sections on standardized tests. I can read anything bio/phys/chem and understand it...but when it comes to mcat verbal, well I run into a wall.

I dont plan on re-taking the mcat a 4th time. I've seriously done my best this last time.

Question: What are my options? and where do I stand.

Im thinking of the following:
- SMP to Drexel, BU, Rosalind, USF, GT
- Apply to my instate FL schools, USF, FSU, UF, UM
- Apply to 2 carribbean schools, St. Georges and SABA

I really want an interview from my FL schools, and hoping that they will look beyond the 6 in verbal and give me a shot...it this realistic?

Any input is greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

Since you seem to do really well in your classes, you should use it to your advantage. If you dont mind relocating (if not already in the Chicago area), I would suggest going to RFU. 3.0 in the post-bac -> you're in the next class entering class (atleast from what I've heard). And ofcourse, I would also apply to medical schools after going through ALL that.

SA rocks!
I always wanted to know (maybe a little stupid): If you are of european decent in South Africa, would you still be considered an african american (given that you got your US citizenship)?

I'm not black, but rather Indian(hindu) and was born in south africa. I have a south african citizenship and US Resident Alien card. I've been in the US for 14 some odd years now. Its funny though, because growing up during aparteid, I as a darker colored skin individual was classified under "colored" and actually considered equally with the blacks. I've had friends tell me to apply as African American to get the URM edge, but I dont want to do that selfishly knowing that I may take the seat of another individual who could have gotten it because they are under-represented, but still competitive for applying to med school. It is highly ironic though. I personally think race should be removed from the application process. But people would argue about status quos and having a certain represenation of asian/white/hispanic etc. That's just my 2 cents.

South Africa is a beautiful country, minus the crime/poverty/HIV, I'm talking landscape and nature wise. I was born in Johanusburg and got to go back last year for the first time in 14 years. Got to see my grandparents and family, was really a blast.

USF won't accept anything lower than a 7 in any section. but i'd email someone and run your situation by them.

I've talked to someone in admissions, they said they would consider my score even with the 6. as long as it was >24 composite wise.
