Hey guys,

I seem to have a problem. I took my CNA reading test today to register for the CNA training course from red cross but the july - august one was filled up so they put me in the one spanning from July 27th to September 18th evening classes. The in class attendance is no problem since its 6-10 pm but the final week of the cna training is full clinical which means i have to be in a nursing home for the entire week during the day. 8am - 7 pm. Can i miss a week of school since it's the beginning but i am a freshman so this could exponentiate my problems quickly. I already paid the 1300 for the course so what should i do?

You can't miss a whole week of classes. You just can't.

Call them and ask if you can be put into the earlier class. If not, then there's nothing you can do and you just threw 1300 down the toilet.

Also, didn't you finish high school just a few weeks ago? Chill out with the threads...

It's nice to get an early start, but don't worry too much about ECs freshman year.

your freshman year... of college?

just wait and take the cna class next summer.

I was planning on doing the EMT-B next summer. If i don't get the CNA cert my plans will be push back one year 🙁

okay time to relax. you haven't even started college yet, and you sound like you're already beyond gunner status. are you planning on actively using both your cna certification and EMT license? pick one and invest yourself into it. you can take an EMT class the summer after that and it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Why don't you just try volunteering in an ER on the weekends? You're trying way to hard on clinical ECs and you are setting yourself up for a rude awakening in Fall if you have your plate too full. Just start out volunteering 4 hours shifts at an ER on a saturday or sunday until school starts.

GPA is more important than anything else mentioned in this thread. Get used to college first, then start worrying about volunteering.

well a week of class isn't too much, especially in the beginning. but once you fall behind, it's very hard to catch up. i would recommend attending your classes since it's your first time in college.

I also think a week of classes is not a big deal, especially since it's the beginning of the semester. With that said, some professor may drop you if you don't attend and there is people who want to add the class. I agree with others in that you need get settle into the college life... Start volunteering at a hospital or something.

what exactly are your plans? CNA this year, EMT-B next year, and then...... The only thing I can see in this progression is to graduate and get into medschool summer after sophmore year, graduate medschool after junior year, all in time to apply to medschool after you gradu.... wait...... 😕

To be honest, you don't even really know if you like your pre-med stuff yet. Most people (even those who successfully apply) do not start stacking their resumes this early. You just graduated highschool, take a summer and gain perspective instead of trying to gain experience 👍

I'd say you should try your best not to skip the classes.

And also, chill out, please! When I was entering college, I was mapping long, elaborate plans out about my ECs, classes, etc., and it turned out to be a waste of a precious, dear summer that I wish I could somehow get back. The thing about college is, it is never going to work out that way. Things will change and shift around, you'll find dozens of equal or better opportunities once you actually start college.

I wasn't even aware that I needed volunteering until junior year 😉

Missing a week of classes may or may not be that big of a deal. It depends on how well you adapt to the college pace, how many credits you are taking, and how lenient your professors are about missing class.

Find out if any of your classes have mandatory attendance, weekly quizzes, tests, etc.; anything that would require you to be in class that particular week. As long as you wont be missing anything worth more than a few points of your grade I don't really see it as that much of an issue.

I basically missed 5 years of undergrad. I never went to class unless I had an exam/quiz or the professor required attendance.

It's doable and freshman year it is definitely doable because those classes are a joke.

Looks delicious. More so since I haven't gone to lunch yet.

OP: Chill out man. You have plenty of time to have your soul sucked away by studying and work later in life. If you can get a refund on the $1300 then great, if not then let it be a lesson to you not to jump the gun.

I called the red cross and they said they will try to put me in an earlier class and if none arises by monday i will get a 1250 refund. Already took the 50 dollar reading test,

Thanks for all the help guys. I got it all sorted out and i should be able to finish the cna course before freshman year. Once again, thanks for all the help and i like what sdn is doing.

I missed a few classes the first week of college a couple year ago, and it was also for a CNA course lol.

But I would not recommend missing every class the entire first week. Also, my school (and maybe yours, too) has the policy where if you're not in the class the first day, you automatically get dropped. So you better be there, or email all your professors and let them know (though your excuse isn't that great).
