Hey guys,
So heres the deal. I decided i wanted to pursue an Mph not too long ago. So i figured i should start gearing myself towards that direction. I am a junior and state college. My GPA is 3.4, I have 2 years Research experience, and I volunteer at the Children's museum. I am looking for more health related opportunities but im really unsure what to do. I almost got a chance to work at my state health department but I wasnt allowed to cause i didnt have a license, and im trying to volunteer at a free clinic. what other options could i try?

Thanks!

if you live in a large metro area try a hospital that is affiliated with a medical school. you could find a position as a research assistant.

good luck

So I've talked to one person who went to Harvard for an MPH and another who went to UPenn (UPenn has a small program, not a whole school). The first did a lot of research in different science fields and also helped a policy agency in washington DC. She said she was an intern at the agency and had helped draft up presentations and such. The other girl, who went to UPenn, helped at a womens crisis center for a year or so and also at a Jewish Family Center where she helped families in need. This girl had a double degree in Psych and Spanish and her grades were about 3.5 and 3.7, respectively.

Phew, now that that's done - I think there are a LOT of ways to tie different activities into public health, as I've come to realize after I took everyone's advice from this forum. Your research experience is a wonderful advantage to have, I'd think (any research can be tied with saving humanity and such, haha). I'm currently helping at a law firm as a volunteer and am working on a healthcare topic. Maybe you could try to find crisis centers around you area? You could also try to join red cross disaster teams, be an amnesty international member, help with educational organizations around your area, etc.

If you need more ideas, I highly recommend you trying membersproject.com, a volunteer site put together by American Express. You can click on the 'volunteer' logo on that page, and type in relevant keywords and your location. It always has GREAT suggestions on what you can do! I found a bunch of my activities through that =)

Just a final note: if you do use the website, definitely get in touch with your particular organizations directly, the website takes too long =(
