Alright, so as many of you know I'm nearing the end of this endless maze known as graduate school. I'll be finished with internship in three short months and starting a postdoc after that. I'm so close to reaching my goal of becoming a professional psychologist that I can almost feel it in my grasp.

AND YET... there's the dissertation. I'm pounding away and determined to finish by this September, but I'm in need of some motivation.

ANY AND ALL PEP TALKS GREATLY APPRECIATED! THANKS. 😀

PS: I will gladly do the same for any of you who need this. After all, it's only fair.😉

Just think of how great it will feel to wake up on a Saturday morning and NOT have to think about working on your dissertation. Avoidance of negative stimuli....it can be a wonderful thing. 😀

As someone who is 2 classes and a dissertation away, I know the feeling, and while I am still on the dissertation proposal, I can only imagine how good this will feel for you to finally put this long haul to your new career behind you.

REMEMBER, YOU ONLY HAVE TO DO THIS ONCE!!! It's so close to being over... If that's not motivational enough I can arrange a few sessions of EST, because with enough voltage, ANYTHING is possible.

So stop procrastinating... Once you're don't you probably won't know what to do with yourself... but get'er done!!!

Mark

PS - You've got this... 🙂

Psychmama, just think of what you've already accomplished in life outside of psychology; you've raised your kids, changed your career, surely overcome much more than this dissertation. Use all this as motivation. Remember that you're working hard for urt family, and because you want to have a career you're happy with. JUST DO IT. Get off SDN and get to writing ; )

My peptalk: You're way, WAY ahead of me! 😉

Thanks everyone. Your words really helped! I feel more motivated already.
😍😉:luck::idea:

Finish the thing, and you'll be a doctor, the title that represents all of the incredibly hard work you put into grad school--the classes, the research, the clinical hours, all of it!

...and you won't be like a friend of mine who's now on year 10 (or will be as of August).

How bout a pep talk for those that are facing an internship year of slave wages (if i dont get into a military internship) with sizable student loans, and a crappy job hunt thereafter which top out at 50-60k starting....UGH

Think positively, you'll make the cut!!! FWIW, I go to intership summer 2011. So who knows... maybe we'll run into each other.

Yes, but it's a small world, you'll be amazed at how quickly it closes in. Last year everyone it seemed like was sent to go to SEAR orientation (USAF, ARMY, and Navy), then there is Navy day at APA, and there will be other opportunities to meet up... you might be surprised.

Psychmama...or should I delay this reply by a few short months and say, Dr. Psychmama,

You are one of my heroes! Chin up! I found encouragement from an acquaintance who recently told me she threw away the official hardcopy of her dissertation. Sure, she has been a licensed psychologist for about 8 years, but she THREW IT IN THE TRASH and felt good about it. Man! Sure love to be at that stage of the game. Dissertation is just a stepping stone (well, Mt. Everest), but nonetheless...you will prevail.

Good luck...enjoy your summer when you can. 😎

Thanks CheetahGirl, I appreciate your support. Wow-- I don't think I'd ever throw my dissertation in the trash, although the thought is quite tempting (haha)! Anyway, back to my writing...🙄

Psymama: I tell all my students when they are slogging through this phase: "Keep in mind that it is just a Big Paper. You've written lots of papers. They all get done. Just think of it as a Big Paper."...

And most docs are thoroughly sick of their topic and text by the time they are done. But I was actually pleased to find that when I was finally able to pick it up again and look at it with equanimity some 12 months later (after a marriage, a move, post-doc, etc.) that it actually was not that bad and not that boring. Hang in there.
