I really want to pursue pharmacy and currently I am a student at FAMU. I did not pass Organic 2 and was told I could not take it over the summer so I did not progress. Today my advisor told me to change my major before they request me to. If I don't change it by Sept. 16, it will appear on my academic record and when I go to re-apply for FALL 07 it could negatively affect my ability to get in. I'm stuck b/w changing my major and taking the requirements for the new major or sticking with pre-pharmacy hoping to get in next year. She basically told me that the reason for them doing this is to make sure everyone gets a degree in something. But my heart is with Pharm and I don't know what else to do. I don't want to waste a year by "hoping" I get in when I could be fulfilling the requirements for another major. Any words of advice would be helpful🙂

Best of luck to you. Perhaps you can appeal their decision they're forcing on you. Are you in Ochem II now? If not, try and get in it. It's weird they wouldn't let you take it over the summer, and then you might not have this problem. I didn't get in to FAMU this year so I feel your pain with dealing with them. Try applying to other schools for next year just in case.

First of all how can not changing your major negatively affect your chances of getting in? At my university, after you have taken a certain amount of hours you have to declare a major. Pre-Pharmacy does not count as a major and this is why you cannot keep Pre-pharmacy. When you declare a real major you can still take any classes you want right? I declared mine as Biology and spoke to the advisor. I told the advisor that I am planning on applying to pharmacy school and they said that was great but they still discussed a degree plan with me just incase I didn't get in on my first try. That semester I finished up my classes towards pre-pharmacy and then began taking my Biology classes when I was ready. You can still re-take Organic 2 whenever you want. I am glad I chose a major because I did not get in last year and so within the year I was able to get my bachelors degree before applying again. Now I have my bachelors and I just started Pharmacy School. Everything will work out, don't worry. 🙂

It seems like you have only been taking the pre-reqs so you could essentially be any science major. But it seems like they want you to switch out of science... well let me tell you about my friend.

She was cell bio & neurosci major and not doing that wonderful - so she talked to her advisor - and the advisor asked if she's set on getting into pharmacy and she did - so the advisor said to major in Psych - its a lot easier and my friend easily aced the majority of the classes. raised her gpa to a 3.6 or 3.7 got bachelor's in psych and minor in cell bio - and got into pharm school....

so take that in mind. If you're set on getting into pharm school - and gpa is very important- take this into consideration.
