In need of some advise, suggestions and encouragement....

ORM with expected cGPA of 3.3 and sGPA of 3.3 from an engineering school (and degree) ; graduating in spring 2016; Medium ECs ; strong LORs ; just got my MCAT scores back yesterday; Completely Shocked.....Don't know what to do next or how to comprehend this or what went wrong on Test Day.....Appreciate any advise that can be offered on potential next steps...Should I retake? I am open to MD and DO schools as well as SMPs.....

Test date: 1/8/2015
Time: 8:00 AM
AAMC average: Average for 3,5,7,8,9,10 : 35
AAMC 11 : 38
Post test expected score: Don't know
Actual score: 29 (PS 12/VR 9/BS 8)

You said you got your score yesterday, but then you state that you don't know what your expected score is. Do you actually have your score already?

I'm in a similar sgpa struggle-boat as you are. My plan is to only get A's from here on out (~8 science classes left), sacrificing a lot of my free time and hobbies to make that happen. Sounds like you have a year left; if you ace it from here on out, and retake that mcat with the equivalent of a 33 you would have mediocre but low tier MD appropriate stats. That may require you to make sacrifices similar to the ones I plan, really depends on where you think there's room for improvement.

You're definitely not out of this so keep your chin up comrade.

yeah I'm confused with the wording of your post

does your "post test expected score" mean what you felt like after the test?

if so, I'd really figure out what went wrong. if you felt "meh" and scored 6 points below your average, then something is wrong.

were you incredibly anxious? did you run out of time? have you taken those AAMC practice tests before?

Sorry - My cut/paste from Score posting in January 8th Exam Thread created confusion....

Yes - I took the January 8th 2015 exam and got my score of 29 yesterday (PS 12/VR 9/BS 8);

My AAMC practice test average for tests 3,5,7,8,9,10 was 35
and AAMC 11 was 38 ; I never took these practice tests before; I was as nervous as some one taking MCAT and I didn't run out of time either...not sure how this happened....not sure how will I find out what went wrong either...

(My "Post test expected score" means how I felt right after taking the exam)

Again - sorry for the confusion and any advise/suggestions/encouragement are appreciated...

Yeah does seem peculiar indeed. Did you finish the sections too early?

definitely retake, find out where you went wrong. usually, its the aamc practice exam scores +/- 3. you're clearly capable of a better score and given your low GPA ( what it is with all your engineer classes factored out?) and your medium ECs, you really need to make up for it with a high MCAT

best of luck on the new one

Well here's the good news, based on your practice scores you showed yourself that you can easily score significantly higher. Don't sweat this too much and switch your mindset to the 2015 MCAT. It obviously sucks and is disappointing, but I would much rather be in your shoes than someone who averaged 29 on practice tests and will likely never score higher. That's not you. Take it again, study even harder and who knows, you could end up in the 98th percentile instead of the 95th where a 35 would leave you. Don't worry about you application/school selection just yet, just stay 100% focused on this soul crushing test that we all love.

Thank you for some encouraging words.

Right now I am pretty bummed.

Does the GPA+MCAT combo will meet DO school cutoff by any chance?

Retake the test. SMP is going to be a not so good option unless you have a stronger MCAT. You may still need an SMP given your GPA.

If after your retake you get a 30s, apply. If you don't get in, then do an SMP. If you don;t get in after that, apply DO.
