I am in a bind with my decision to either take the MCAT this April, or if I should wait to take it at a later date, and apply after I finish my undergrad. I am currently a junior at UW Madison, where I just transferred to this semester from another state university. My first semester as a freshman did not go so well. I received a 3.02, however, my past semester GPAs have been 3.45, 3.85, and 3.92 with an overall average of a 3.54. I have A's in most of my pre req's so far: physics 1, o chem 1, chem 1, calc 1, bio 1 and calc 2. I am currently taking four pre reqs this semester here at UW Madison: physics 2, o chem 2, bio 2 and stats. I strongly think I will do well in all of these classes. My EC's consist of coaching basketball, working for Lutheran Social Services for 1 1/2 years (working with disabled individuals in their home), tutoring, physician shadowing, PT volunteer, and quite a few intramural teams that I was the captain of. What I am currently involved in is an Autism volunteer group, UW HOSA (blood drives, relay for life, etc.), and a ballroom dancing team. However I just joined these groups as this is my first semester in Madison. I am also planning on volunteering in a nearby hospital this October that is if I am not already too busy.
Do you think I should take this volunteering position, or do I have enough exposure to the medical field?
One of the reasons I debate applying this June is my involvement in these EC's. This is my first year here so I am not going to have any opportunities to become a leader of these organizations. What do you think?
I plan on studying for the MCAT this winter break and the following semester up until April; using Exam Krackers Bio and Verbal, and the Berkeley R. Physics and Chem. Is it a good idea to take the mcat while the material from my pre reqs is still fresh? Any other advice?
I do not have any research under my belt, except for a library research project due this semester for my bio class. I consider this as research, but in a different form. My problem is if I wait to apply until after my undergrad, I could easily be a part of some research this coming spring and be a part of it for 1, 1 1/2 years before I apply. What do you think?
Thank you for your time
