I know I'm kind of rehashing an old subject, but I'm worried 🙂

If a school holds an open house/interview day where a select number of students is invited, and you are unable to attend...how likely is that to hurt your admission chances?

Arg....don't these schools understand that we're applying to an average of 10-12 schools, spending over a grand on application fees, many of us are currently in school (and being on the quarter system I have finals in March which is when these interviews typically are), and finally we're BROKE students!!!!!!!!

Sorry just venting! If only videophones had taken off.,....then they could conduct live interviews over the phone and still see us....arg arg arg

Most will say you don't have a chance if you can't make the interview/open house. I have heard this from faculty members and it happened to me. I was unable to attend an interview that was on only one day because I had already committed to another interview.

You can ask for a phone interview and see where that gets you. It might help, but I honestly don't think it will help enough.

They used to tell us (waaaay back in '09  ) that you shouldn't apply to any schools you couldn't afford to travel to.

That was a laugh though, we did anyway.

I think that the field is so competitive that any reason to eliminate you is gold to them. Can your parents help?

Sorry you're going through this. If it helps make you feel better, I have an annoying habit of leaving change lying around my car and in pockets. My husband is convinced that this is a holdover from my starving grad student days, when I would hoard coins for coffee. I think he's right. 😉

So it's temporary. Buck up little camper!

Yea...being married and old kinda eliminates parents. Aside from monetary reasons I am also concerned since the majority of these open houses are conduced during the week leading up to my finals week, or are during finals week for my winter quarter.

Only 2 programs so far have told me that it could affect my chances.....others have said it is not a problem because they understand people can't fly across country.

I mean if a program told me I had a 1 in 5 chance I might do it...but these schools are inviting anywhere from 30-80 students...which leaves me at about a 5% chance.

Some schools don't host their open house until after admissions decisions are made, which is kinda nice. I'd rather pay to fly out after I've been accepted.

Argg .....I honestly cannot wait until this crap is over.
