Hi! I'm trying to find anyone with experience as PT in the Navy. I'm currently researching applying for ODS as an avenue after graduation later this year. I've found mixed information concerning loan repayment and if the branch will provide assistance with repaying loans as a DPT. Additionally, I was curious as to what deployments entail for a PT. The recruiter told me that deployments and being assigned to Marine Units are optional for PT officers, however, I would like the perspective from someone who has already been in that situation.

"...deployments and being assigned to Marine Units are optional for PT officers..." Find another medical services officer recruiter.

Yeah, didn't believe that at all when she said that, which threw up some red flags for me.

I am not currently a Navy PT, but I have just been selected for a Navy seat for the Army-Baylor DPT program starting this fall. My shadowing experiences and past military experiences have shown me that Navy PT's WILL get deployed according to the needs of the Navy. Deployments for a DPT most likely would mean being stationed at a US hospital over seas (2-4 years), but it could also mean being stationed aboard a ship. In the US, you could be stationed at a hospital (Navy or Marine) in a variety of settings, at an outpatient clinic, or with a Navy or Marine special forces unit.

I don't know much about loan repayment programs. I did see that the application process for ODS as a PT is a long process and some what competitive. My recruiter told me that if I didn't make it into Baylor, I should consider getting a couple years of experience after graduating in order to be competitive for a seat at ODS. However, I know there are plenty of Navy/ Military PT's on this forum, so maybe they can give you more advice.

Hope this helps.

I recommend checking out the Federal section of the APTA. You can find contacts there who work with each service branch, they should be able to address your specific questions.
