In Serious Trouble--Real advice needed

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Typically, the code of conduct that guides student's behavior in school is issued during the first week. It is VERY odd that you would be given a year's leave of absence for doing something like that on the 2nd day of medical school without any warnings. Sounds too vindictive to me. However, I would go and beg for mercy anyway. Cheating is cheating despite the circumstances; even if you were one of a hundred that was singled out. And if that doesn't work, then get an attorney and fight.

Idiot gunners trying to get another 0.05% on the one of 5 tests in a class to go from an Honors to an Honors
Really? This is not why people cheat.
True but keep in mind those committees can be awfully small and this early in the year without much data to review on this student and without the student getting much input, it can easily just be the Dean's rec getting rubberstamped by like 3 people.

Student may have to appeal to have more than just their one meeting with the Dean taken into consideration.

The committee would meet with the student in question in these cases. Usually this committee also has student representatives as well.

Fair enough, I shared some stories above that others found.... to be administratively interesting.

I hope this student's institution is more like you describe

Who doesn't discuss answers on clicker questions is the real question

Either troll or not the whole story. Why were you whispering to a classmate if the whole class had resources open and all were discussing?

You're leaving out a big part of the story.

Sure, everyone pops in to say there's story missing.

I think so too. What do we imagine that to be?

1) OP was cheating 2nd day of med school
2) this was not 2nd day of med school
3) dean was not present
4) clickers were not involved
5) OP was actually found out to have had a minor in the possession of tobacco ticket from juvenile record at 16 that he thought was expunged but wasn't in time and the med school has figured this out, and is now using the "clicker" excuse for mandatory LOA for a year and not just kick them out over it
6) OP's university has somehow managed to pass along a rumor that they had an institutional action for suspicion of collectible Treasure Troll doll smuggling interstate
7) OP is did not report the correct age on their app, in fact, while their mother told them they were two years younger, this was actually something she forged so they would be too young for the draft or to buy more time to get into med school before having to be married off, instead of kicking them out they get a LOA for a year, and this came up so the school is buying time to carbon date OP now and a year from now to sort this out
8) I remember somewhere there being like financial or resident or VISA issues leading to this kind of thing, but usually not for the stated reasons of cheating
9) what you are reading is a glitch from the Matrix
10) OP is just not tall enough to ride this ride, RTC 1 yr

1) Unlikely. I think most people are too much in awe/petrified to cheat on Day 2. That feeling of "I can't believe I'm in med school!" is too strong.

2) This is my leading hypothesis. Perhaps Day 2 of second year, with a student already treading on very thin ice due to actions as an MS1. Still doesn't explain the dean's presence, as even students on probation don't have a dean following them from class to class. (see next item)

3) Likely. I think whatever happened eventually led to the dean's involvement, but I can't wrap my mind around the idea of a medical school dean sitting around watching the first years (or any class!) take a clicker quiz on day 2, and singling out one person doing something among an auditorium full of people doing the same thing.

4) Clickers seem to be a trouble point for multiple students these days, so I'm willing to believe they were involved. Glad I'm old enough to have missed the clicker craze.

5) Possibly some kernel of truth-especially if OP really is a first year. I can see some black mark from the past coming to light early in the academic year. However, if a purposeful cover-up was involved, I'd think we'd be talking about an expulsion, not a 1-year LOA. An honest mistake would be more likely to result in a LOA while things were straightened out/investigated.

6) No way. What academic institution has any reason to put forth an effort into screwing over a graduate? Getting donations? They'll pull out all the stops. Sabotage? Nope, unless we're talking serious crimes. They've got all the hassles of a new academic year to deal with themselves.

And now I've grown bored. That was a fun little thought exercise.
