How's everyone preparing for the in-service exam at the end of this month?
I'm reading Tintinalli about my patients, reading EM Secrets, and going through Peer VII questions. Hopefully I'll do alright...😱

All I ever did as a resident was PEER VI. And I did very well. That's all I would do.

Or you could go to my lecture this Friday at the Georgetown Emergency Medicine Residency, I'm giving a "Prep for the Inservice" Lecture. That's probably all you would ever need.... but too bad you probably won't go.

Peer VII, EM Secrets ( not really using Secrets that much).

Actually I am doing a bit of everything. I have my Peds Er test on the 27th, ABEM inservice 28th, and step 3 on March 1 and 2. So I don't really know which way is up anymore. But I think somewhere in my pile of books is Peer VII.

Good luck, Peer VII is pretty good

One of the biggest mistakes with standardized exams is going for too many sources, then spreading yourself too thin.

Make a (reasonable) plan and stick to it.

I have always advocated for thoroughly reading EM secrets, doing Peer VII, and reading the answers. Nothing more, less. I was able to do very well with this and so have others.

If you prepare for the inservice, and pass, then you'll have to prepare for the boards because you don't know if you can pass them without specifically preparing for them.

Whereas if you simply read what you want to read, and you pass, you know you don't need to do any additional study prior to the real thing.

🙂 This was the approach I took to it; I passed it each year and got the exact same score on the real thing as I did on the inservice as a PGYIII.

I'm not saying don't read. I'm saying don't read specifically for the test.
 
My approach last year was PEER VI and Rivers.

This year, I'm only doing test questions/answers. I did PEER VII (much more annoying than VI) and am now going back over V and the Q/A that goes with Tintinalli. Doubt I'll finish them but that's my approach.

I figure I'm preparing to take an exam by practicing taking exams.

We'll see.

Hey all,

Bumping this thread. In-service exam is just a couple of days away. We have incentive to do well at my program (extra week of vacation), so I am studying. I am noticing that PEER 7 focuses ALOT on the LLSA articles from the last few years. Given that ABEM is who recommends those LLSA articles as well as gives the inservice test and our certifying exam I would think that they would be on the test. I really didn't notice it last year (but last year I didn't even know that the LLSA articles existed). Anyone else remember if the LLSA articles are high yield or not?

Also PEER 7 is much worse than PEER 6. I mean come on there is a question about the diagnosis and management of male breast cancer. This isn't an emergency and such a rare condition that I doubt any of the attendings out there have been the first to diagnose a single case of male breast cancer. Also questions that the correct answer is "x MAY be associated with the described condition" don't belong.

Hey I know this was mentioned before and I think BKN answered it..

But whats a reasonable score for a PGY-1,2,3?

Obviously 1 is all I care about but im asking anyhow..
