I know there are in-state preferences for med school application, especially public school. I also know there are regional preferences for residency, like east coast programs more likely to interview east-coasters, and west coast for west coasters. But is there preference for state's residency? For example, would California more likely to choose med students originally from cali or going to med school in cali? Or would students from surround state like OR, NV, or WA have a similar chance? thanks!

There really is no state preference. More east coast grads go to east coast residencies, but it's unclear if that's a selection "bias" of the residency programs, or the resident's themselves.

all things being equal, i think the instate resident would have an advantage, as PDs are going to view him as a "safer" option because its likely his family/support system is closer. while maybe not common, its not unheard of for residents to grow wary of being so far from their families and it affecting their satisfaction.

Hey, just another med student here, with similar concerns myself. I'm from CA, but decided to go to school out East, and am looking to go back to CA for residency. I recently perused the websites of some of the programs that I am interested in (from links in FREIDA). Once on the website of the program, just look for some kind of a link to "Residents", and you can see a list of the current residents, including where they went to medical school and undergrad. From what I saw, most of the CA programs (I was looking at EM) were 25-50%+ OOS - so it doesn't seem that there is too much to worry about. Since the rules of the game are different for residency matching vs. med school applications (i.e. no waitlists or last minute changes), I think it makes sense that the programs probably follow advice similar to what we get, which is to rank those whom you want the most first, without worrying so much about "Are they going to accept?" - 'cause if they don't, you just get the next one on your list. Anyway, just my 2 cents - good luck!
