This depends on each specific state, because each state has specific rules with regards to what constitutes residency. For example, in PA, Ohio, Indiana, etc., you can get residency after one year of living (and filing taxes) in that state, but in Texas, you have to be living there for 2 years WITHOUT attending college, universities, etc.
