In-State vs Out of State

I was born and raised in CA but I'm currently living in Maryland for graduate school. I'll be here for around 3 years by the time I actually start applying to med school. Will this make me an MD resident or can I still apply for CA in-state med schools as a CA resident? I file taxes as an independent but my parents still live in CA.

For APPLICATION purposes -- technically, you input your own state residency. I dont know how it would look if all your experiences for the past several years were in MD, but you put CA as your permanent residence, though. Someone on adcom would have to speak to that.

For TUITION purposes, I doubt you'd still be considered a CA resident. Im originally from illinois (parents are there etc) and I asked UIC about this. They essentially said I would have to live there for a full year for non-academic purposes prior to matriculation to qualify as an IL resident.

I will do that, thank you. Should I also reach out to the CA state schools as well? I was thinking about applying broadly to DO programs as well. Do they also favor in-state students mostly? Are there MD/DO schools that accept a large percentage of out of state students?

Sure, couldn't hurt! I know if youre from the central valley or the inland empire, growing up there would be a HUGE plus for schools like UCD, UCR, & CUSM. They can speak to what counts as residency for their tuition purposes.

Most of the CA schools do not favor IS vs OOS, except for UCD and UCR, in terms of admissions. But it is worth asking in terms of residency for tuition purposes.

There are only a few DO schools that favor IS vs OOS. Let us know when you make a WAMC post.
