Do you think in the area emails can be too early? I will be in NYC in very late January and have two schools I'd like to notify, but I'm not sure if I should do it immediately or wait a bit longer.

Also, to those lucky ones among us with successful in-the-area emails, how big of a date range did you give schools? I don't want to narrow it down to one day before or after but NYC is an expensive city to hang around in

Even if you're not invited for an interview (just yet), you can let the schools know that you will be around the area by noting that you plan on taking a tour of the campus, visiting friends who are attending the school, etc. By showing interest, I think the schools will take notice and invite you for an interview. As far as timing goes, I think it's best to let the schools around this time because the holidays are coming up and scheduling might become difficult.

I sent couple of in-the-area emails. I let them know 3-4 weeks before. They emailed me back with something generic like "thank you for your update and continued interest in our med school." Nothing more you can do after that but wait...
