I have an interview coming up in early october in nyc. i applied to another college in that city.
1. In the "in the area" email do i tell the school that I am interviewing at another university that week.
2. How soon after completing secondary can I send the "in area" email?

I also have a question:

How far away does the school have to be to send an in the area email? I'm assuming a 5 hour bus ride is too close?

IMO, if two schools are less than 1 hr driving distance apart, then you should send an in the area email.

For example
GW and Georgetown warrants an in the area email. Einstein, Hofstra, NYU, Sinai, SUNY downstate and SUNY upstate, columbia warrants an in the area email. Temple, Drexel, Jefferson, upenn warrants in the area email

I feel if you're coming from an opposite coast then you can stretch a little bit beyond the 1 hour mark. If you're from Cali and going to Boston I don't see a big deal with sending an in the area to a school in NY or to Dartmouth in NH because you could get there by bus in an afternoon.

But if you're going to Miami, I don't think you should be contacting Columbia

What if you live 5 hours away from an area that has lots of medical schools? Is that too close to say that you will be in the area? Are you considered to "always" be in the area?

In the area requests from applicants that live "in the area" are the ones that really annoy.

I know you have a much better perspective on these emails, but in defense of nearby-residents sending "in the area" emails, if you're working full-time, it does become rather tricky to plan interview traveling with the limited vacation days you're allotted 😛 I guess, though, it would technically be possible to take red-eye equivalent bus/train after work hours and only miss work on the day of the interview -- but I'd imagine that would get exhausting and old rather quickly if you had to do that over and over again, hahah

This is what I did as someone from Seattle. BU II and emailed the NY schools and Jefferson. Decided against the DC schools though ... Hopefully I can group a bunch of interviews together and save some moneys!

Anyone think the time of the day you send "in the area" email matters? Will sending it in the beginning of the day be better than at the end of the day (I know this is being super neurotic) ? hahaha 😳

If you live within an hour or two of the medical school, is it okay to email them and let them know you're in the area?

Edit: whoops, just saw gyngyn's post.

So, coming from Florida to Pittsburgh, could I send in the area emails to all north eastern schools? I'm talking Cincinnati, Georgetown, NY schools, etc., or is this excessive? I work full time, so I would be nice not to have to fly up there more than once. They are basically right next to each other...

I'd hesitate to send that many schools in the area emails on the off chance that multiple schools get back to you and then you have conflicting IIs. I'd focus on one adjacent metro at a time.

Can anyone give any input on sending in-the-area emails within the state? For instance, if the school is a four hour drive away, would an "in-the-area email be frowned upon?

I don't think it makes sense at all to send in the areas to that many schools. They are not close together in a travel sense--have you actually taken a look at the available flights? How easy it is to get between specific airports depends more on the carriers than on geographic proximity.

Pittsburgh to NY is 4 hours. Pitt to GT is 4 hours. Pitt to Cincinnati is 3 hrs.

ITA emails should only be used for schools that are <1 hr away (ie GW and GT, all the NY city schools, duke & unc, etc)

Someone needs to purchase a map of the United States...

I'm driving OOS from CA about 5 hours. The two schools are within 30 miles of each other. I'm thinking about sending an ITA to try to get the interviews scheduled within a day or two of each other.

I don't know if they would consider 5 hours far enough to consider it, but it would save me those 2 tanks of gas and 10 hours of driving haha

I bumped this thread because I'm nt sure how to word these ITA emails

If it helps, I live in CA and recently got II to a school in DC, now I'm wondering if I should sent an ITA email to another school in DC I'm waiting to hear from

I am curious about this too. I have about 6 hour drive into LA and would like to hit up some more schools in the area.

ITA email are mostly for plane rides from coast to coast or the like and the schools should be <1hr driving distance away from each other.

I've already had to do 2 5hr drives to a couple of schools that are relatively close to each other. Driving 5hrs is nothing
