MD & DO In what specialties is the sky NOT falling?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

I’m sorry, but your post was just completely useless  If someone asks a discreet question, saying “it depends” with no follow up or range helps no one.

MGMA is definitely on the inflated side. From what I understand it is mostly for hospital-employed physicians, and also includes benefits. It probably includes a disproportionate amount of pediatric hospitalists, which now require a ridiculous fellowship.

You only think it’s inflated because SDN loves quoting the academic salaries to students

Mgma is not inflated. It’s the largest dataset used to negotiate contracts every day.

I have the MGMA 2019, it’s saying hospitalists are making north of 300k on average, ENT is making 500k, allergists are making 367k, dentists are making 210k and freaking PODIATRISTS are making 267k. It is grossly inflated. I mean, I guess it could make sense if you add malpractice insurance? None of that is going into your pocket however.

I don’t know about the podiatrist but the numbers for hospitalists, ENTs, allergists, and dentists are def reasonable especially with my knowledge of real #s out there.

Yeah, those numbers are pretty accurate

why is it so hard for anyone in medicine to believe that doctors make what they make.
Even without the many sources of data you can use, At most public universities you can search faculty compensation publicly and see for yourself where the floor is (academics) for a specialty.

All the public sources of data have lower salaries than the MGMA, including the BLS, Texas Tribune, University of Virginia and Jackson Memorial Hospital salaries. UTSW pays their hospitalists 218k and UVA an abysmal 160k lol. Jackson memorial is not an academic hospital and hovers around 240-260k. If you check out the Sdn IM subreddit, community hospitalists are paid between 240-260k. I have not seen a single source that matches MGMA data. You can say “based on my experience” all you want but come on, that’s just availability bias.

Infectious disease is listed as 280k in the MGMA. Come on, you’re telling me that’s not complete BS?

Really? Cause Wikipedia says otherwise:

"Jackson Memorial Hospital is a non-profit, tertiary care teaching hospital and the major teaching hospital of the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. "

As why MGMA doesn't match reddit (besides the obvious), let me demonstrate.

My wife was a hospitalist until 3 years ago. When she quit, her base pay was 240k. So that's inline with what reddit is telling you. However, her yearly bonus was 50k. So now her total compensation is 290k which is inline with MGMA.

Our only full time ID guy hit 7000 wRVU for 2019. Now I don't know what his RVU value is, but given that primary care is $40/RVU there's no way his is less than that. So that's 280k right there, before any bonuses.

So yeah, that's not complete BS.

Yup, they don't tell you the RVU bonuses past a certain RVU cutoff. It's not hard to be pass that line unless you're just straight up super inefficient.

RVU bonuses can range from $0 to 200K.
