as part of your reason to pick dentistry or does the adcom like it better if you pretend you are completely selfless and just want to help people and love teeth.

please, mention the good hours/income! see what happens - or, rather, what doesn't happen. 😎

Haha I didn't say any of these things, but also didn't mention income. Write about why you honestly want to go into dentistry. If it's because of the lifestyle then give it a shot, but don't make it the main reason. Write down a list of reasons why you have chosen dentistry. Think about what you have observed during your experiences and what your strengths are. And how dentistry may be conducive to your personality (if it is).

Kneecoal is right though.

I would turn good hours into "flexibility"... you like the flexibility that being a dentist allows you. I'd shy away from income more, but once again you could say "support your family" or something along those lines. I'd vote nothing too blatant!

I would stick with the truth...dentistry is a career dedicated to bettering the oral (and often general) health of others.

I wouldn't try and guess what the adcom wants or likes. Your personal statement is a place to highlight what makes 'you' a unique individual. In my case, I'm a trained concert pianist who has volunteered a lot of time sharing music with others (often for free/ nursing homes, etc.), worked in research for over 8 years at Johns Hopkins University helping patients overcome substance abuse, and have a fake id so I can give blood twice in one day because I MUST save two lives, not just one.

(Can you detect which of my three points is the 'artificial selflessness' above) 😀

I guess the bold. Musicians share their music b/c they are good at it and want to show off. It's to boost their ego's. I win

is it wrong that this made me laugh?

ummm...bad idea dude, unless you want to secure your place on the rejection list

Well, I haven't even begun the application process yet (still need to take the DAT), but reason choosing dentistry is a great question.

I love the patient interaction and the art of it all. I'm an RDH, so I do have first-hand experience in the field. I definitely know that I want to stay with dentistry, whether I stay an RDH or go on to dental school. Having been a hygienist for a few years now, I am very motivated to try for dental school so that I can do even more! 🙂

I would stay away from those in your PS... I think ADCOMS will see through that... If you don't have better reasons, make them up.. or choose something you are more passionate about

Considering in dental school you will have practically no personal time and end up hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, it's probably not a good idea to let them know that time and money are your motivational factors, they might think that you'll struggle in dental school.

Say you do become a dentist and you work the short hours that you want, how would you think that would impact your local community if you're the only dentist or of a small number of dentists? Dentists have a large responsibility to serve their communities. After all, dental school is costly and there is a very limited number of seats in the US. In fact, more dentists are retiring than graduating dental school today.

Mention a word about good hours and income, and you're guaranteed not to get into dental school:laugh:

Nah...us musicians don't need an ego boost...our dashing good looks are more than enough to remind us we're hot stuff! 😉
