Other than trading stocks and investments does anyone know a viable way of earning a steady and respectable income during medical school?

I was thinking maybe posting advs about being a MCAT tutor or ugrad science tutor. The thing is I imagine the pay is relatively light from those type of things unless you work 20+ hours a week.

What's the best way to earn something to keep the loans reasonable while also not going over 10 hours of work a week?

I think tutoring is about as good as it's going to get. If you're good, you'll be surprised how much you can charge, not just for MCAT tutoring but also high school kids with rich parents who like the idea of their kids' tutor being a medical student. You also can't beat the flexibility, which is pretty important if you're going to try to work while in med school.

I suppose if you're desperate you could enroll in the occasional paid clinical trial.

If you have time, tutor biochem or physiology so you can get paid while you solidify your own knowledge on those topics.

I know I had zero time to do all that during pre-clinical years because all I did was study.... especially 2nd year. Second year of med school was one of the worst years of my life. Constant studying, constant anxiety about boards, boards prep, then topped it off with 4 weeks of 14-16 hr days of legit studying. I think a part of me died inside, I will never be the same, but at least I scored high on Step 1....

Tutoring and research are two ways to make a bit of side money. But I would say that your performance in medical school is going to make a big difference in terms of which specialty you can go into and your future salary, so it doesn't make sense to invest a lot of time in a part-time job now.

I TA LiveOnline classes for Kaplan and make around $400/week, which helps a lot.

How many hours a week does that take up? How much prep work do you have to do for those...

Tutoring is a great idea if you can get it. If you really want to work you could consider getting something as a bartender or waitstaff. If you are able to find the right situation then you can have a flexible schedule, make $100 or so here and there and be able to do something completely non academic. Do it for a little extra $$$ in your pocket don't think you are going to make any significant dent in your loans. Honestly, I think most people are better off just concentrating on school and enjoying what free time they have.

Wow, that's great for 12 hours/week. More than $30/hr...

I'm teaching an EK prep course; 4 hours/week (plus a few hours for prep) at $20/hr. It's actually a nice break from med school material and is extremely simple in comparison, so "prep" consists more of ensuring that I cover everything that needs to be covered and getting together a lecture that doesn't suck versus studying/memorizing stuff. Obviously $80/week isn't going to make you rich, but considering it's all of 7-8 hours a week (which I would probably be wasting anyway) I'm not complaining.

I plan on still trying to be a firefighter. I pick shifts a month in advance and I can pick up as much or as little as I want. 12 hour shifts and once im done with my training for the day the time is mine to relax or study. I can sleep the whole night too if we dont get any calls, not a bad gig.

Sperm donor if you're male

I tutor high school and college kids. Super flexible and I make decent money

I think you’re supposed to just work at Dominoes Pizza until you graduate and become a resident. Unless you’re a licensed CNA/EMT or RN?
