hey all,

I am an incoming DO student who has their sights on matching neuro some day. I’m aware that this may change throughout my education. However, I was just wondering if anyone could provide me up to date pertinent advice that I could use from day 1 in order to optimize my ability to match. Thank you!

  • don't fail courses
  • take the usmle
  • try to do average or above
  • do one or two auditions at ACGME places and get letters
  • apply to a reasonable number of programs and have realistic expectations
  • research can help. EC's can help. attending conferences can help. Though not mandatory

I’m definitely not shooting for anything crazy like high tier academic spots. Just somewhere where I’ll learn to be a solid attending some day. I’m am planning on working hard from day 1 and planning to take step 1/2. I’ll also be doing auditions when the time comes, with hopes of getting a letter. I probably won’t be able to gain much research, but I am going to try to get some set up. I’m just not sure if it will work out.

Thanks for the advice!

Bumping this since it's in the same vein of questioning.

Are there ways to network if you'd like a specific program? Would say, setting up shadowing help? Is there no hope for someone to start research if they have no research experiences (I just want to be an awesome clinician 🙁 )?

Your focus should be on learning how to learn. Make friends - they will become your study partners and later on lifetime friends.

You’ll be fine. Try to enjoy medical school - not many people get to experience it.
